My Story

I wanted to share a little about me and my journey as a baker. I started when I started planning for my eldest daughter's 5th birthday party. She turned 5 in January 2015. I was having a frozen themed birthday party for her and I knew that what I wanted, I couldn't get at a grocery store bakery. So, I began my journey in late 2014 of learning first, frostings. I started with boxed cakes but homemade american buttercream.

My first cake

Now I did not have the best camera back then so the picture is not the best but, this is it! I made several batches of candy learning how to make it and flavor it and all that. So that was a box blue-velvet cake with a vanilla american buttercream and homemade candy shards, they were 'Elsa's ice'. It's definitely not an amazing cake but I am still proud of it as I knew absolutely nothing at the time! I mean, I didn't even know to level my cake, I had to learn how to fill piping bags for the cupcakes. It's funny thinking back on my journey and all the simple little skills I had to learn. I still am not amazing and have a lot to learn but I have come far! The next year was a Brave themed birthday, the cake was still simple but I started expanding my baking skills a bit more and, I was baking my cake from scratch and I added in cupcakes that were more than a swirl!

Brave birthday party

This is it, it was a chocolate cake, finally scratch made, with an american buttercream. I made bear claw cupcakes with chocolate american buttercream as the fur and cashews for the claws. I also made "spell cakes", they were little pastries with a glaze topped with a jam filling to replicate the cake Merida feeds to her mum that turns her into a bear. I have come a long way from this point but I am really proud of this party, it's still probably my favourite. Over the years my eldest, Chloe now 8, has watched me grow my passion and become better. She's baked cakes with me when I'm testing recipes and we've done a couple just for her to do because she loves making fondant decorations. This past weekend we made a cake just for her. She chose flavours, colors, and made a design.

Chloe's Cake

She chose to make a strawberry cake and I made an Italian meringue buttercream (new frosting option available to choose from now!) and she made bunches of fondant decorations. She had so much fun learning to level & split the layers and how to fill & frost. It was a lot of fun. I hope you all enjoyed a wee peek into my past bakes and my daughters learning journey!
